The Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 is the sequel to the very popular and original game of the same name. It has been revamped and upgraded according to the manufacturer.

There is now a very big demand for home fitness games, mainly on the Wii, PlayStation 3 Move and Xbox Kinect. The Kinect is the only one of the 3 that offers the opportunity to participate in the game without a controller. The other two consoles require movements to be tracked with either a remote controller or a balance board. The Kinect can pick up all of the players movements. It registers all the motions and gives a more detailed and complete representation of the exercises and form being demonstrated by the exerciser. The Wii and PS3 Move use the data provided by the movement of the controller to calculate the body movements of the player.

This additional functionality means that Kinect does provide an opportunity for a really great fitness game. But is this game the one to deliver on the potential of the console?

The Pros

Tracks All Body Movements: It is difficult not to seem too over-the-top when explaining the benefits of full body tracking. You don’t have to stand on a balance board or hold a controller correctly for the game to track your movements. So you can just concentrate on performing the exercises without the distraction of these gadgets. There is also far less limitations on the types of exercise you can do due to this tracking system. It does not include any type of controller into the exercise routines, so it can record and score movements more accurately.

Wide Range Of Difficulty: Because it has the capability to track a total body movements, this game has a wider range of exercises than many of the other fitness games available. It can range from the easier and simpler exercises such as yoga stretches and dance steps to much tougher exercise routines like the Military Boot Camp game. This means the game can cater for casual exercises and beginners right through to more serious exercisers who want a more intense workout routine to really push them. For those looking for a tougher workout the Kinect and Your Shape 2012 is considered by many to be the best fitness game available.

Workout Feedback: You can get some really good feedback on how well you executed the exercises in your workout routine straight after you complete the session. This can be valuable to the exerciser as they can see whether they are executing the exercises correctly. The game notes this and points out where they haven’t been performed properly. This is very helpful on the more complicated exercises because it can help with correct posture and execution to help in avoiding injuries and getting the most benefit from them. The Kinect does need to set up correctly and there needs to be enough space for it to be able to record and track all the movement fully.

The Cons

Room Needed: The Kinect system has certain space requirements. Kinect recommends an area of 6 feet but most people have found they need at least 8 feet for it to work and for best results 10 feet and over is ideal. With less than this room the game does not record all movements and can result in you being told you have only completed half the required number when you’ve completed them all. This can be very frustrating especially after you have just completed a tough routine and give your all.

This is more a shortfall of the platform rather than the game. With the PS3 Move and Wii you don’t need as much space to perform the exercises.

Menu Navigation: The controls over the menu have been upgraded and improved since the original Your Shape game. However, there are still some concerns over the ability to be able to navigate around the game, and it can still be quite annoying and tiresome at times. It can be easier and quicker to turn on the controller and move around the menu the traditional way. This is probably not a reason to avoid the game but it is still somewhat frustrating and would really add to experience if they could get this sorted.

Should You Buy The Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012?

There are a number of things to consider when deciding on a fitness game. If you already own the Kinect then the Your Shape Fitness 2012 is a very good choice. It is considered by most people to be in a league of its own as the best home fitness game available for the Xbox360 Kinect.

However, if you do not have a console then the decision is more one of which one should you buy the – PS3, Wii or Xbox? These are all very good consoles and they do cater to different types of gaming. There are benefits and disadvantages to each one.

There is little question that the Xbox Kinect and Your Shape 2012 provides the most range of workout routines available from gentle exercise to the more intense workouts for the more serious athlete. No other combination gives the same level of intensity that you get from these two. You can personalize the workouts for your own circumstances and goals and the tracking software allows you to exercise and workout the whole body. The drawback with this game and Kinect on the whole is the amount of space required for it to work correctly. If you do have the require rom this is an excellent choice as it is the most complete home fitness game available today.
